Graduation Information

Before applying for graduation:   Please meet/contact your faculty advisor to update and finalize your degree plan.  This will help ensure that you have met or will meet all the requirements in order to graduate from your major of study.

Undergraduate Graduation Application Process

Step 1:  Starting from the Student Homepage in your Student Portal Dashboard, on the left-hand side of the page go down to Graduation > Apply for Graduation.

Step 2:  Start the Application for Graduation.

If your status shows “Eligible for Graduation” then you will be able to select the option Select to Apply by toggling from “No” to “Yes.” This will make the Apply button available for selection. Click Apply to continue with the application.

Step 3:  Complete all the steps of the application and submit at the end. 

Step 4:  An email will be sent to your student email that we have received your application, which will also include the Degree Check Form.  Please send the Degree Check Form to your advisor.  After the Degree Check Form is completed by the advisor and the appropriate signatures are obtained, it must be turned into the Registrar's Office. Please have a degree check on file before the degree can be conferred.

Step 5:  An undergraduate graduation fee of $25 will be applied to your student balance.  Please make sure to have this fee paid by the end of the semester. 

If you have questions about the graduation ceremonies, getting your cap and gown, announcements, and class rings, from the left side of the student homepage, go down to Graduate > Graduation Information.  This will take you to the Graduation Information webpage on the UTPB website.

Step 4:  An email will be sent to your advisor confirming that you have applied for graduation. 

Step 5:  A graduate graduation fee of $50 will be applied to your student balance.  Please make sure to have this fee paid by the end of the semester. Students seeking only a graduate certificate will need to apply and pay the $50 graduation fee.

All graduation regalia is available through the UTPB Bookstore, located on the back side of the Mesa Building.

Graduation Regalia

All graduation regalia will be available on the bookstore website during the week of Grad Fest and will also be available for pickup during Grad Fest.

Students do not need to preorder regalia. The bookstore will have all sizes in stock and available for pickup or ordering.

Where Will the Commencement Ceremony Be Held?

Commencement ceremonies are held at one of the following venues:

• Midland County Horseshoe
• Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center

What Are the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center Policies?

Please share this information with your guests regarding prohibited items, clear bag requirements, and stroller policies. Full details are available on their website.

Clear Bag Policy

All bags will be screened before entry. Bags must be clear. No tinted, iridescent, or mesh bags are allowed.

• Maximum bag size: 12" x 6" x 12"
• Small non-clear wallet: 8" x 3" x 5" or smaller
• This policy includes diaper bags

Stroller Policy

Strollers are not permitted in the lobby or theater due to fire code regulations.

Exceptions:

• Collapsible car seat/stroller combinations (such as Doona) that fit within a standard seat
• Strollers for children with special needs (contact the Wagner Noël box office for assistance)

How Do I Receive Cords or Stoles?

If you are a member of a club or organization affiliated with UT Permian Basin, please contact your specific organization regarding any cords or stoles available for graduates.

Each organization coordinates its own recognition items.

What Is a GradPass?

A GradPass is a virtual name card with a QR code used during check-in. It allows your name to appear on screen as you cross the stage.

Your GradPass will be emailed to you closer to the ceremony date. Please bring your phone with your GradPass displayed or bring a printed copy.

Are Tickets Required?

Tickets are not required. Graduates may invite as many guests as they would like.

Guest seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Will the Ceremony Be Live Streamed?

Yes. The commencement ceremony will be streamed live at:

How Do I Order Graduation Photos?

GradImages is the official photographer for UT Permian Basin commencement ceremonies.

What Are the Latin Honors Requirements?

To be eligible for Latin Honors, students must:

• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50
• Complete at least 48 credit hours at UT Permian Basin
• Be receiving their first bachelor’s degree

Eligible students may purchase their Latin Honors stole from the UTPB Bookstore when picking up their cap and gown.

Latin Honors are determined based on final grades received by the Office of the Registrar. GPAs are subject to change until all grades are finalized.

Honor Designations:

• Cum Laude: 3.50–3.79
• Magna Cum Laude: 3.80–3.89
• Summa Cum Laude: 3.90–4.00

What If I Have a Double Major or Dual Degrees?

Double Major (120 credit hours):
Your diploma will display the first major listed on your graduation application. Both majors will appear on your transcript.

Dual Degrees (150 credit hours):
You will receive two diplomas. You will line up with your first degree, and both degrees will be announced during the ceremony.

What Is In-Absentia Registration?

A student who has completed all degree requirements but is not enrolled in coursework must register in absentia in order to have a degree conferred.

Changes to in-absentia status must be approved by the academic dean and processed through the add/drop procedure. Refund policies follow University guidelines and are subject to specific deadlines.

What Should I Bring to the Ceremony?

Do not bring large bags, purses, or personal items. These items may not be carried or worn during the procession, and storage will not be available.

Please review the Wagner Noël clear bag policy if applicable.

What Should I Wear?

Commencement is a special occasion. Graduates should dress appropriately, as regalia will be worn over regular clothing.

Business casual or dressy casual attire is recommended. Graduates will participate in a lengthy procession, so comfortable shoes are encouraged.

Graduation regalia should be removed from packaging prior to the ceremony.

Can I Decorate My Cap?

Yes. Graduates are welcome to decorate their caps.
