Dual Credit Program

All students planning to take dual credit courses in Texas public colleges are generally required to demonstrate college readiness in reading, writing, and mathematics. This is typically done through the Texas Success Initiatives Assessment (TSIA2), though approved SAT or ACT scores and also STAAR results can serve as alternatives. There may be other exemptions. Contact your High School Counselor or Representative for more information.

Dual Credit provides a pathway for motivated high school students to accelerate their education, gain college experience, and reduce future college costs while still completing high school requirements. Interested students should:  

• Speak with their high school counselor or representative to determine eligibility and course options.
• Ask their high school counselor or representative to complete the UTPB Dual Credit Student Record form (Dual Credit Student Record)
• Submit required test scores and transcripts

How to Enroll in Dual Credit Courses

Follow these steps to complete your enrollment:

1. Have your high school counselor or district designee complete the Dual Credit Student Record, which includes the courses you plan to take at UT Permian Basin.
2. Submit your TSI scores or approved exemption documentation.
3. Submit your official high school transcript.
4. Once your information is processed, you will receive an email with instructions on how to log in and view your scheduled courses.

What Happens Next?

After your enrollment is processed:

• You will receive access to your student account.
• You can view your class schedule and course details online.
• Additional information about the semester and next steps will be provided via email.

Understanding Tuition and Payment Responsibilities

Dual credit courses at The University of Texas Permian Basin provide an affordable way for high school students to earn college credit. Because these courses are offered in partnership with school districts, payment and billing processes follow specific timelines and guidelines.

It’s important for districts and students to understand tuition rates, payment deadlines, and enrollment responsibilities to avoid delays or disruptions.

Tuition and Billing

• Tuition for dual credit courses is $100 per semester credit hour.
• School districts are responsible for payment for all enrolled students as of the census date (12th class day).
• Invoicing will begin after FAST validation is completed.

Payment Timeline

• Full payment must be submitted within 30 days of receiving the invoice.
• Late payments may impact future enrollment or program participation.

Important Policies

• Each district and/or dual credit student must follow the University's enrollment cancellation processes. 
• Refunds, if applicable, are subject to UT Permian Basin policies and procedures.

• If approved, your counselor will submit the request through their online portal on your behalf.

• Drops requested after the 12th class day will be recorded on a student's official UTPB transcript.
• Course changes may impact both high school graduation requirements and college academic records.

View Refund Schedule

The six drop rule states that students enrolled in a Texas public institution of higher education as first-time freshmen are not permitted to drop or withdraw more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career (Texas Administrative Code 4.10). This limit includes all transfer work taken at a Texas institution of higher education. Any courses dropped prior to the 12^th day of class will not be considered attempted hours.

What is the cost of textbooks?
Textbook costs can vary from class to class. Some FAST eligible students do not pay for textbooks at all. Most students will need to speak with their high school representatives to determine how best to obtain their textbooks for class. Please speak with your counselor or high school representative. 

Will these credits transfer to another college or university?
Many dual credit courses — especially core academic courses — transfer to other Texas public colleges and universities. However, transfer policies vary, so students should always confirm with the receiving institution.

What happens if I drop or withdraw from a Dual Credit course?
Dropping or withdrawing can affect both your high school graduation requirements and your college transcript. It’s important to speak with your counselor before making this decision.

Can my parents access my grades?
Because dual credit courses are college courses, student records are protected under federal privacy laws (FERPA). Parents may only access information if proper authorization has been completed.
